Two-Day Crime Prevention through Environmental Design Training Course

From October 5 to 6, 2022, the Windsor Essex Regional Community Safety & Well-Being Plan sponsored two-day training courses to share the concepts and principles of Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED). These workshops were facilitated by Barry Horrobin, Director of Planning and Physical Resources at Windsor Police Service, and taught participants how to evaluate physical places and implement proven CPTED strategies to contribute to safer communities.

Safety and Crime Prevention Walks

The Plan’s Priority of enhancing “Engaged & Safe Communities” continued to be actioned through partnerships with regional police services and the facilitation of safety and crime prevention walks. Walks took place in the Town of Essex in June, Town of Harrow in August, and Town of Leamington in September, and they were facilitated by Barry Horrobin, Director of Planning and Physical Resources at Windsor Police Service. Residents learned how to prevent opportunities for crime and change the way they see and walk through their neighbourhood.

Substance Supports in Neighbourhoods Accessed through Police Partnerships Announcement

A partnership between Windsor Police Service, Windsor-Essex County Health Unit, and City of Windsor called Substance Supports in Neighbourhoods Accessed through Police Partnerships (SSNAPP) was announced on June 22, 2022. Originating from a $1.5 million grant (over three years) from the Ontario Ministry of the Solicitor General's Community Safety and Policing Grant Program, SSNAPP is a policing/neighbourhood outreach strategy that aligns with the Plan and supports ongoing efforts to address the far-reaching effects of the opioid and other substance crises across Windsor and Amherstburg. SSNAPP and its various initiatives align with Priority #3 of the Plan, “Mental Health & Substance-Use Supports.”

Festival of Guest Nations & Public Safety Information Day

On September 18, 2022, City of Windsor representatives attended the Festival of Guest Nations & Public Safety Information Day in Leamington to spread awareness of the Plan while promoting Priority #2, “Engaged & Safe Communities.”
