Neighbourly Living

Windsorites work hard to keep their city clean and safe. The City of Windsor’s By-law Enforcement and Building Inspection Units partner with Windsorites through active enforcement and public campaigns to enforce City by-laws. These by-laws are written to achieve the following:

  • To protect public health and safety
  • To protect the environment
  • To protect public and private property

To learn more about these topics, or to register a complaint about a violation of the regulations mentioned on this website, please feel free to call 311 or email

Here is a brief summary of the considerations you and your neighbours should keep in mind:

(By-law 6716)

  • Please keep noise levels down to ensure a happy, vibrant neighbourhood.
  • If you are subjected to excessive noise by your neighbours, please contact the City to register a complaint.
  • “Noise” is defined as unwanted sound and is prohibited in residential areas at all times.

Yard Maintenance
(By-law 3-2006)

  • Unkempt yards can be an eyesore, and in some cases they can even be a safety hazard.
  • Grass must be cut (below 12 inches).
  • Overgrown weeds and standing water must be removed.
  • Garbage and debris (discarded or abandoned items) must be properly disposed of and picked up.
  • Alleys must be maintained, and inoperative vehicles must be stored under a structure.

Garbage and Recycling
(By-law 2-2006)

  • Please ensure that garbage and recycle is at your curb or designated collection spot no sooner than 7:00 p.m. the night before and no later than 6:00 a.m. on your collection day.
  • All empty containers are to be removed from public view and stored in the side yard or rear yard before 8:00p.m. on the day of collection. Containers are not allowed to be stored at the curbside, in the front yard or on a porch.
  • If you require a collection calendar, please call 311 or see your area's collection schedule online.
