Dog Licence

Step 1 - Who Needs a Dog Licence

Every person who owns or harbours a dog in the City of Windsor is required under By-law 245-2004 to register the dog and purchase a dog licence.

  • A dog tag is to be securely fixed on the dog at all times until the tag is renewed or replaced.
  • Failure to renew a dog licence before the February 1st deadline will result in penalties and/or possible charges under By-law 245-2004.
  • A maximum of three (3) dogs per home is allowed

Pit Bulls (Restricted Dogs)

Restricted Dog Licences (Pit Bull-type of dog) have different regulations.

By-law 245-2004 prohibits the Pit Bull breed of dog. As stated in the by-law, "Pit Bull" means:

  1. Pit Bull Terrier, or
  2. Staffordshire Bull Terrier, or
  3. American Staffordshire Terrier, or
  4. An American Pit Bull Terrier
  5. Any dog which has the appearance and physical characteristics predominantly conforming to the standards for any of the above breeds, as established by the Canadian Kennel Club or the American Kennel Club or the United Kennel Club or as determined by a veterinarian licensed to practice in Ontario.

Licences for Restricted Dogs are issued on a renewal basis only to those who purchased a dog licence prior to September 30, 2004.

Any Pit Bull or Pit Bull-type dog that has not been licensed annually since September 30, 2004 is deemed to be a Prohibited Dog and cannot be harboured or licensed in the City of Windsor.

Step 2 - Requirements

A spay or neuter certificate or veterinarian’s certificate is required for dogs that are newly acquired or recently altered.
