Marriage Licence Requirements
Before your appointment, ensure that you have completed your online application and gathered all required original documents.
What to Bring
You must provide:
- A completed marriage licence application signed by both applicants
- Two original pieces of valid government-issued identification for each applicant (At least one piece must include a photo.)
- Original divorce documents, if applicable
If only one applicant attends the appointment, that person must also bring the other applicant's original identification.
Photocopies, photographs, and digital images of the identification are not accepted. Documents that are not in English must be translated by a certified translator.
Accepted Identification
Identification with a Photo:
- Passport
- Driver's licence or enhanced driver's licence
- Ontario photo identification card
- Citizenship card
- Permanent resident card
- NEXUS card
- Canadian Armed Forces identification card
- Native status card
- Record of Immigration landing
- United States green card
Identification without a Photo:
- Birth certificate
- Change-of-name certificate
- Immigration status document, such as a record of landing or work visa
Marriage After Divorce
If you were divorced in Canada, you must provide an original or court-certified copy of one of the following:
- Certificate of divorce
- Decree nisi
- Decree absolute
Divorce orders, divorce judgements and photocopies are not accepted.
If you were divorced outside of Canada, please contact the Vital Statistics Office before applying, as additional authorization is required:

Fee
- The marriage licence fee is $140.00.
- Accepted payments for a marriage licence: debit or credit card (Mastercard or Visa)
Language Interpreter
Applicants are responsible for arranging a language interpreter if they require service in a language other than English.
Couples who require a sign language interpreter may make their own arrangements or may ask the Vital Statistics Office to make the necessary arrangements. As required by the City of Windsor's Accessibility Standards for Customer Service, the cost for a sign language interpreter will be borne by the City.
Age Requirements
Applicants must be at least 18 years old to marry in Ontario by licence or under the authority of the publication of banns without authorization or parental consent.
If you are 16 or 17 years old, you may marry if you have the consent in writing of both parents. Other restrictions may apply.
