Youth and Teen Swim Lessons

If your child has taken Red Cross Swim Lessons, our registration guidelines chart will give you some idea of the comparable Life Saving Society Swim Lesson level.

Swimmer 1

Swim instructor and youth studentStudents will become comfortable jumping into the water with and without Personal Floatation Devices (PFD). They will learn to open their eyes, exhale underwater and retrieve items off the bottom of the pool. They will work on floats and move on their fronts and backs for 3 to 5 metres. 30 minutes Pre-requisite: 5 years, beginner, non-swimmer or Pre-school 1 or 2.

Swimmer 2 

Swimmers learn to support themselves in the water without an aid, sideways entries wearing a Personal Flotation Device (PFD), learn and practise whip kick and begin swimming 5 to 10 metres on their front and back. 30 minutes. Pre-requisite: 5 years, Swimmer 1 or Pre-school 3 or 4.

Swimmer 3

Swimmers will enter the water using dives, rolls and cannonballs. Swimmers will learn to tread water, do handstands and in-water somersaults, and swim under water. They will work on the front and back crawl and do endurance swims of 25 to 50 metres. 45 minutes. Pre-requisite: 5 years, Swimmer 2.

Swimmer 4

Swimmers will refine dives and stride entries. They will learn eggbeater kick, foot-first surface dives and in-water back somersaults. They will also work on sculling and swim lengths of front crawl, whip kick and breaststroke arms with breathing. Endurance swims will be 50 to 100 metres. 45 minutes. Pre-requisite: 5 years, Swimmer 3.

Swimmer 5

Swimmers will master shallow dives, eggbeater kick, foot-first sculling and underwater swims from surface dives. They will work on front and back crawl and breaststroke with 50-metre swims of each stroke. There will also be 25-metre sprints and endurance swims of 100 to 200 metres. 45 minutes. Pre-requisite: 5 years, Swimmer 4.

Swimmer 6

Swimmers learn advanced aquatic skills such as compact jump entries and eggbeater kicks while changing directions. They will swim front and back crawl and breaststroke 100 metres, and do sprint interval training and a 200-to-300-metre endurance swim. 45 minutes. 
Pre-requisite: 5 years, Swimmer 5.

Swim Patrol

This program is organized into water proficiency, first aid, recognition and rescue. The levels emphasize measuring water skill efficiency in terms of improvements in time over distance. The concept of tracking personal best performance is a key characteristic of this training.

Rookie Patrol

Endurance challenge 350 metres. Victim recognition, fitness training, rescue drills, lifesaving kick 25 metres. Rescue breathing. Underwater swim 5 metres. 45 minutes. Ages 8 to 15.

Ranger Patrol

Endurance challenge 500 metres. Victim recognition and avoidance, entries, rescues, search skills, removals, rescue breathing and fitness training. 45 minutes, Ages 8 to 15.

Star Patrol

Endurance challenge 600 metres. Removals, defences, rescues and rescue skills, obstructed airway procedures, fitness training. 45 minutes. Ages 8 to 15.
