Sandpoint Park
10300 Riverside Drive East
Sandpoint Beach Park is a waterfront park located along the south shore of Lake St. Clair near the mouth of the Detroit River. The park forms part of a continuous green space that includes Ganatchio Park and Stop 26 Park, connected by the Ganatchio Trail and Riverside Drive. The area is known for its wide open views, sandy shoreline, and direct access to trails, recreation, and passive green space.
Additional features at this location include a seasonal lifeguard-supervised beach (typically starting in June, weather and conditions permitting), outdoor showers and foot wash stations, shaded seating areas, accessible beach mats (seasonal), nearby parking and trail connections to the Ganatchio Trail.
Park Master Plan and Improvements
The City of Windsor has completed a comprehensive Master Plan and Shoreline Class Environmental Assessment for Sandpoint Beach Park and its adjacent parkland. The plan, prepared by Landmark Engineers Inc., focuses on enhancing safety, accessibility, and the long-term sustainability of this well-used waterfront area.
The most significant change is the planned relocation of the designated swimming beach further east on the site, away from areas affected by strong currents near the river mouth. The former beach area will be reconfigured with shoreline protection features to discourage water access in that section.
The approved master plan includes:
- A reimagined park layout connecting Sandpoint Beach Park, Ganatchio Park, and Stop 26 Park
- Shoreline improvements including naturalized areas, rock revetments, and new pathways
- A new splash pad, accessible playground, shade pavilion, and improved walkways
- Updated support facilities including washrooms, outdoor showers, and lifeguard stations
- Tree planting and green buffers to enhance comfort and habitat while maintaining lake views
These improvements are being phased in as funding becomes available. Detailed design work is currently underway.
