Ernest Atkinson Park

2005 Riverside Drive West
Ernest Atkinson Park is an active and well-loved community space in Windsor’s west end. A soccer field, outdoor swimming pool, accessible playground, and skatepark attract local youth. The outdoor pool is typically open from late June until Labour Day.

Ryan Barron Memorial Skate Park
The skatepark at Ernest Atkinson Park has served Windsor’s skateboarding community for more than 20 years. In 2023, it was officially named the Ryan Barron Memorial Skate Park in honour of Ryan Barron, a Windsor skateboarding and music enthusiast who frequently used the park and shared his passion for skateboarding with others. Ryan lost his life in 2016 after being struck by a vehicle while skateboarding.
The Friends of Atkinson Park and Pool Committee began fundraising in 2016 for a proposed concrete skate bowl known as the “Barron Bowl,” which was approved in principle by City Council in 2019. As estimated project costs increased, the available funding was no longer sufficient to construct the bowl, and the focus shifted to rehabilitating and adding new features to the existing skatepark.

On May 26, 2025, City Council approved matching funds of up to $59,261 and directed administration to proceed with improvements using available funding and stakeholder input. An online public survey conducted in fall 2025 received more than 250 responses, and the City also met with skatepark users and community representatives to review potential improvements.
Based on this feedback, the City worked with Canadian Ramp Company, the Canadian affiliate of the original equipment supplier, to develop a plan that rehabilitates the existing equipment and adds new features requested by the skatepark community. The project includes repairs, welding, refinishing, installation of platform guardrails, and other improvements to extend the service life of the existing equipment, as well as new and replacement ramps, grind boxes, and curb features. Construction is scheduled to begin during the week of August 4, 2026, and is expected to take approximately one to two weeks, weather permitting. The skatepark will be unavailable during construction.
