In 2026, the City of Windsor replaced the playground at Optimist Memorial Park with a large accessible nature-themed playground with rubber safety surface.
Optimist Memorial Park is a 50-acre community park in South Walkerville with deep community roots. Originally established in 1925 as Senator Kennedy Park, the site soon became known as Memorial Park in honour of local veterans. In 1949, Optimist Park was added to the south, and in 1974, the Optimist Community Centre opened as part of the park complex. For a period, the site was also referred to as the Frank L. Mallory Optimist Park, in recognition of Frank L. Mallory, longtime principal of King George School and an active member of the Windsor community. Today, the unified site is known as Optimist Memorial Park, offering a variety of sports facilities, natural areas, and community gathering spaces.
The park is also home to the W.F. Chisholm Public Library, further strengthening its role as a hub for the South Walkerville neighbourhood. A new community garden was installed behind the community centre in 2024 as part of the City’s Community Gardens Program.

Optimist Memorial Park also features one of Windsor’s few cricket facilities, complete with a cage and pitch for practice and play. Other recreational opportunities include soccer, baseball, basketball, dog parks, and multi-use trails. The park is also home to a remnant oak woodland containing magnificent old-growth oak trees alongside species such as silver maple, white ash, black walnut, red cedar, basswood, wild cherry, witch hazel, thorn apple, and wild crab apple.
