Dog Park Developments

Dog Park Developments

The City’s Dog Park Policy, as recommended in the 2016 Parks & Outdoor Recreation Master Plan approved by Council in 2019, outlines the governing rules and regulations for the creation of new dog parks referred to as leash-free areas. There are three key groups of criteria that must be met when placing new dog parks within the city of Windsor and what amenities need to be included when creating new dog parks:

  1. Geographic Location in Windsor: disbursement and type of park
  2. Restrictions: avoiding proximity to other park amenities
  3. Inclusions: the minimum size and amenities to be included

As noted in the City of Windsor Parks & Outdoor Recreation Master Plan, the number of dog parks is limited within the city, and it identified the east end and the south end of the city as a specific areas that are lacking a dog park. Based on all of the criteria and factors identified within the Dog Park Policy, Elizabeth Kishkon Park was identified as the highest rated potential location for a new dog park in the east end of the city, and Oakwood Park was identified as the highest rated potential location for a new dog park in the south end of the city.

Windsor City Council has earmarked $880,000 in the capital budget for new dog park development projects. Once feedback from public consultations can be factored in, the new dog parks could be ready for the summer of 2023.
