Social Housing Programs

Social Housing subsidies percentagesSocial Housing refers to rental housing developed with the assistance of government and subsidized by Municipal and Federal government for people with low to moderate incomes; seniors; or people with special needs who can live, with supports, in the community.

As illustrated in the chart on the right, subsidies are provided to private landlords and independent Non-Profit Housing Corporations (known as housing Providers) who manage the day-to-day activities of the housing developments in the Windsor-Essex County service area, under five distinctive programs:

  • Public Housing - 41 percent
  • Non-Profit/Cooperative Programs - 28 percent
  • Federal Programs - 24 percent
  • Rent Supplement - 6 percent
  • Aboriginal (Urban Native) - 1 percent
