Waste and Recycling
Bi-Weekly Garbage Collection Begins October 21, 2025
- Starting the week of October 21, 2025, weekly Green Bin collection for organic waste will begin (see below for more details), and this will be accompanied by the City’s change to bi-weekly garbage collection. This means that regular garbage will be collected every two weeks (like recycling) instead of every week, while organic (Green Bin) waste will be collected every week.
- Using your Green Bin for food waste and other organic materials (for example, eggshells, coffee filters, fruits and vegetables, fats and oils, etc.) significantly reduces the amount of waste in your garbage bin.
- By separating organic materials, households can manage their waste more efficiently, reduce landfill use, and support a cleaner, greener Windsor.
- Check your collection calendar for more details on when this affects your area.
- For general information, call 311. For detailed inquiries, call 519-974-2277 ext. 3121.
Green Bin Program
Starting the week of October 21, 2025, food waste and organics will be collected from Windsor residences. To make sure residents are ready, a Green Bin will be delivered to single-family homes during the months of July to October 2025. To find out when your collection begins, check your collection calendar.
By putting food waste in the Green Bin, you can reduce your garbage by up to 50%. Your efforts help to:
- Create renewable energy and fertilizer for next year's crops;
- Reduce greenhouse gases that are created when organics are unnecessarily landfilled;
- Extend the life of our local Essex-Windsor Regional Landfill, which avoids the high costs of a new one; and
- Foster a shared sense of environmental responsibility to support this agriculturally rich region.
For details on the Green Bins, including delivery and general information on the program, visit the Essex-Windsor Solid Waste Authority website.
Blue Box Recycling Transition Takes Effect January 1, 2026
- Blue recycling carts are now being distributed throughout the region.
- Starting January 1, 2026, Essex-Windsor will move to a single-stream system, which means you can place all recyclable materials together in your new cart (no more separation into red and blue boxes).
- Please keep your cart stored until the new system begins in the New Year and continue with the traditional red/blue box collection for the remainder of 2025.
- For more information, contact GFL at 1-844-415-4351.
