Investing in Windsor’s Transit System

$63 million in new capital projects over the next decade, $17.8 million operating subsidy in 2023

Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens and Transit Windsor Executive Director Tyson Cragg shared details today of the significant investments in Windsor’s transit system for 2023 and beyond.

The City will invest $63 million in public transit over the next ten years and to date has purchased 24 new buses and added upgrades to the existing fleet to extend the lifespan. $120,000 was invested to enhance Handi-Transit operations and acquisition of assets to encourage accessibility for all riders. In addition, $200,000 was dedicated to major repair costs for the hybrid buses while $51,000 was allotted to maintain and replace bus shelters, signage and other customer amenities.

Transit Windsor’s latest reports show a 118% recovery in ridership compared to pre-pandemic levels, emphasizing the importance of continuing investments in public transit. Transit Windsor’s ridership is on pace to top a record-setting 9.5 million trips in 2023. The 2023 City of Windsor budget invests in Transit Windsor to help residents move about the city safely, comfortably and efficiently. The 2023 Service Plan supports the Transit Master Plan by providing for an increase of 18,000 new service hours, and the introduction of nine new routes that will provide more service to more places, more often.
