City of Windsor partners with snapd to deliver a Virtual Canada Day Experience when we need it most
The City of Windsor is gearing up to celebrate Canada Day in Windsor-Essex. Several community partners are working together on innovative activities to help us celebrate online and at home.
Working with generous support from Tim Hortons, snapd Inc. snapd Windsor, AM800 CKLW, and Tourism Windsor Essex Pelee Island (TWEPI), and with community partners like the Windsor Parade Corporation, the City will present a Virtual Canada Day Experience on Wednesday, July 1, 2020. A virtual fireworks display, painted rocks and decorated porches will help us celebrate together while being apart. As with any memorable party, the success is in the details and the planning.
Virtual Fireworks Display
The highlight of the celebration will be an innovative and uplifting experience for residents to collectively enjoy from a safe distance. Utilizing snapd’s Augmented Reality platform, the experience will showcase a number of unique and memorable activities that families can enjoy throughout the day, culminating with a spectacular virtual fireworks display that will feature Canadian astronaut and author, Chris Hadfield, who will lead the final countdown at 9:30 p.m. To get ready, download the snapd HUB app right away on your mobile device. When the time comes, select the Canada Day event, follow the prompts, and enjoy the show.
Residents are encouraged to also decorate porches, yards and balconies; snap pictures of painted rocks in the community; and submit everything using #TimHortonsWE for a chance to win Tim Hortons Gift Cards, a "staycation package" from TWEPI, and more!
The Giving Spirit of Windsor

Drew Dilkens, Mayor, City of Windsor:
“Join us for a Canada Day to remember! I’m excited that we’ve found a unique and innovative way to celebrate our Country’s 153rd birthday during the pandemic. Normally on this day we would all be gathered downtown in a sea of red and white cheering along the Canada Day parade route, eating cake at Festival Plaza or lining up for a carnival ride at Summer Fest. I’m thankful to the sponsors and partners who stepped forward to put together a stellar virtual celebration. I’ll be watching, and I hope you’ll join me. On behalf of the City of Windsor, and from my family to yours – Happy Canada Day, Windsor-Essex!”
Vicky Smith, Tim Hortons Restaurant Owner:
“Tim Hortons Windsor-Essex Restaurant Owners are so happy to be a part of the Canada Day Virtual celebration. It is so important that we come together virtually to celebrate Canada Day and the community togetherness that we have seen over the past few months.”
Jeff Casey, Owner/Publisher, snapd Windsor
“We are very proud to be partnering with the City of Windsor, Tim Horton’s, AM800 CKLW and TWEPI to bring the Virtual Fireworks to the entire community of Windsor and Essex County. The experience will be new for many, and having Chris Hadfield do the countdown leading into the virtual fireworks and Canadian music accompanying the show will be an experience to remember.”
Gordon Orr, CEO, Tourism Windsor Essex Pelee Island
“We wish we could be welcoming locals and visitors to our top attractions and allow them to explore our streets and neighbourhoods, but this year that just isn’t possible. But what is possible is for locals to enjoy Canada Day virtually with this creative event. These virtual fireworks will still allow us to gather safely, and enjoy great entertainment from the comfort of our own backyards, rain or shine. Top it off with some locally delivered bites from our restaurants or a delivery from our local wineries or breweries and it will make this year’s Canada Day one to remember.”
