What is Recreational Staff employment?
The City of Windsor, throughout the year, hires individuals on a temporary part-time basis to work within the Recreation & Culture Department. The Recreation & Culture Department offers various programs and services to the community throughout the year, and employment opportunities are a result of the need for qualified individuals to be hired to assist the specific Recreation Centres in offering their programs.
What positions are available under Recreational Staff employment?
Recreation Staff Employment encompasses positions of Hostess/Guide, Recreation Program Instructor, Facility Attendant, Lifeguard, Marina Attendant, Aquatics Instructor, Marina Coordinator, Program Coordinator, Program Development Supervisor, Aquatics Area Supervisor and Pool Supervisors.
What are the qualifications and requirements to be eligible to apply?
To be eligible to work as Recreation Staff, an applicant must meet the following criteria:
- For most positions, an applicant must be a minimum of 16 years of age at the time of employment;
- Applicants must have some experience in sports/recreation field or working with children;
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
The following positions require a specific formal application to be completed and specific qualifications are noted:
Lifeguards/Aquatics Instructors/Pool Supervisors
- Must be 16 years of age or older by Friday, May 11, 2012;
- Applicants must hold and maintain the following qualification awards current from May 4, 2012 to September 3, 2012 as a condition of employment: Lifesaving Society NLS (National Lifeguard Service), Lifesaving Society Instructor, Lifesaving Swim Instructor, CPR Basic Rescuer (level C) and Standard First Aid;
- Copies of qualifications (or proof of enrolment) must be attached to the application. All applicants must provide their original qualifications and submit them to the Recreation Department at 2450 McDougall by May 4, 2012;
- Lifeguards/Aquatics Instructors must be available to work from their starting date until Labour Day, September 3, 2012;
- Pool Supervisors must be available to work from their starting date until September 7, 2012;
- Preference will be given to applicants with previous aquatics experience.
Marina Attendant
- Must be 18 years of age as of April 6, 2012;
- Applicants must hold and maintain the following awards as a condition of employment: Lifesaving Society Bronze Cross, Standard First Aid and CPR Basic Rescuer (level C);
- Photocopies of certifications (or proof of enrolment) must be attached to the application. All qualifications must be submitted to the Recreation Department at 2450 McDougall by April 1, 2012;
- Qualifications must be current from April 1, 2012 until October 31, 2012;
- Marina applicants must be available for work starting approximately Monday, April 9, 2012. Applicants must be available to work from their starting date until approximately Wednesday, October 31, 2012.
Recreation Program Instructor (Day Camp)
- Must be 16 years of age at the time of employment;
- Must have a minimum of 3 months experience in sports/recreation field working with children;
- Must hold and maintain as a condition of employment a current Standard First Aid and CPR Basic Rescuer (level C) certificate for the full term of your summer employment;
- Will be required to complete as a condition of employment the Play Leadership Training and Principles of Healthy Child Development Training.
What is the rate of pay for Recreation Staff?
Applicants hired under Recreation Staff employment are considered probationary employees for the full period of employment and receive the appropriate pay rate established by the governing collective agreement.
Salary Schedule "E1" - Seasonal Recreation Staff of the C.U.P.E. Local 543 Collective Agreement, governs the rate of pay for Recreation Staff positions. Rates of pay range from $16.87 per hour to $20.25 per hour (2012 rates).
When and where are the Recreation Staff opportunities advertised?
The City of Windsor's website, www.citywindsor.ca on the Work for Windsor page which advertises positions available for the Summer Employment programs with the Recreation & Culture Department.
Currently, the advertisement for Recreation Instructors - Day Camp, Marina Attendants and Lifeguard/Aquatics Instructors/Pool Supervisors appears on the City of Windsor website.
Recreation Employment opportunities also appear on the City of Windsor's website, www.citywindsor.ca on the General Supply Positions page. Applications for Recreation Staff positions (non-inclusive of Summer Recreation Program positions) are accepted on an ongoing basis.
How do I apply?
Those interested in applying to Recreation Staff positions with the Recreation & Culture Department, have the opportunity to apply by completing and submitting a formal application and/or resume. Applications and/or resumes are accepted throughout the year.
Summer Employment Recreation Staff positions such as Marina Attendants and Lifeguard/Aquatics Instructors/Pool Supervisors require a specific formal application to be completed within established deadline dates. A resume should be submitted for Recreation Program Instructor (Day Camp) positions.
Applications and/or resumes may be picked up and/or dropped off at the following locations:

What are the deadlines dates for the applications to be submitted?
Generally, there are no deadline dates established for Recreation Staff application/resume submissions as these submissions are accepted throughout the given year.
The Summer Recreation Program recruitment has specific deadlines established for Recreation Program Instructors (Day Camp), Marina Attendants and Lifeguard/Aquatics Instructors/Pool Supervisors. The following represents the deadline submissions for each of the categories.
Recreation Program Instructor (Day Camp)
- A general application and/or resume is accepted by the Human Resources Department or any one of the Customer Care Centres
- Application submission deadline date for this category is Friday, March 16, 2012 by no later than 4:30 p.m.
Marina Attendant
- A specific formal application is available at the Human Resources Department or any one of the Customer Care Centres. Please note failure to complete a formal application in this category will eliminate you from further consideration for Marina Attendant positions;
- Application submission deadline date for this category is Friday, February 10, 2012 by no later than 4:30 p.m.
Lifeguard/Aquatics Instructor or Pool Supervisor
- A specific formal application is available at the Human Resources Department or any one of the Customer Care Centres. Please note failure to complete a formal application in this category will eliminate you from further consideration for these positions;
- Application submission deadline date for this category is Friday, February 10, 2012 by no later than 4:30 p.m.
How will I be notified in the event that I am given further consideration to a position?
Representatives of the Recreation & Culture Department will be responsible for reviewing resumes and/or applications in relation to the qualifications and experience of the position. As part of the recruitment process, a test and/or interview may be conducted. Selected applicants will be determined based on their overall ranking in the recruitment process and their availability for work based on the requirements of said position.
A Recreation & Culture Department representative will contact you directly to schedule a test and/or interview and will notify you directly in the event you were successful in the competition.
What happens if I am successful in obtaining a position with the Recreation & Culture department?
In the event you are offered a position as part of the Recreation Staff employment, a supervisor or designate will meet with you directly to outline the details of your employment. You will be required to provide the following documents prior to your official starting date:
- Social Insurance Card (It is a requirement that the original card be presented at time of documentation. If you have misplaced your card, please contact the nearest Employment Office for a replacement card as soon as possible. If your replacement card will not be ready in time for documentation, please bring with you the receipt from the Employment Office);
- Birth Certificate, Passport or Baptismal Certificate (original document required);
- Proof of educational requirements as per requirements of position (original documents required);
- Direct Deposit Information (voided cheque or bank book with a bank stamp indicating the bank's transit number [5 digits], bank's institution number [3 digits], and full account number); in the event you do not have the above information, banking institutions are able to offer a direct deposit form with all your banking details noted on the form;
- Completion of current TD1 (governmental taxation) forms;
- Valid Ontario driver's licence (if applicable to position requirements);
- Satisfactory police clearance (if applicable to position requirements);
- Completion of a Hiring Approval Form (the supervisor or designate will provide the form for completion);
- Family Relationship Declaration Form (to be completed in accordance with Corporate Policy);
- Completion of Respectful Workplace Form;
- Review and receipt of Conflict of Interest/Code of Conduct Policies.
Will Orientation/Training be provided?
All new employees are required to view the online Corporate Employee Orientation Program at time of hire.
A general orientation will be offered to new employees applicable to divisional requirements of the Recreation & Culture Department.
The Corporation has mandated a Corporate Employee Safety Orientation to be completed by all new employees prior to commencing their duties in their new position. All employees must attend this full day training; an employee will not be able to actively work in their position until satisfying this requirement.
All employees are required to meet the minimum requirements of the position. There are mandatory training courses to be completed for all new employees specific to the particular position. The training schedule can be accessed on the City of Windsor's Recreational Staff Employment webpage.
If I have worked with the City of Windsor, Recreation Department before, can I be rehired?
All interested applicants must apply by completing the required formal application form (specific to the Summer Recreation Program) or by submitting a resume to any one of the designated areas noted previously.
For those previously employed, consideration to a position would be based on meeting the minimum requirements of the position, the outcome of the recruitment process and subject to a previously satisfactory work history.
