The Windsor Gateway plays a key role in the economy of Ontario. This border crossing serves as a major trade route representing approximately 1/3 of the commercial truck traffic between Canada and the United States and the movement of $140 billion in goods each year.

On March 11, 2004, the governments of Canada and Ontario together with the City of Windsor signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the Let’s Get Windsor-Essex Moving Strategy, whereby the governments of Canada and Ontario committed to an investment of up to $300 million, under the Border Infrastructure Fund, for improvements.

The Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) administers construction of these projects.  Engineering Department staff are assigned as leads on behalf of the City.
