Councillor Percy Hatfield was elected to City Council soon after his retirement from a long and successful career as the Municipal Affairs Reporter for CBC Television in Windsor, where he also hosted the popular weekly segment "Percy's Political Panel." Now in his first term on City Council, Councillor Hatfield was also elected to the national board of directors of the Canadian Federation of Municipalities and to the provincial board of the Association of Municipalities of Ontario. Councillor Hatfield currently serves as the Vice-Chair of the Essex Region Conservation Authority. Councillor Hatfield is also the Chair of the Board for the City-owned Roseland Golf and Curling Club as well as the Armouries Re-use Committee and he is a member of the Windsor Sympnhony Orchestra Committee studying whether the Armouries could be used as a concert hall. Other committee memberships include the Windsor War Memorial Committee; Arena Committee and the Cultural Master Plan Committee, as well as the committee studying the city's proposed development charges. Councillor Hatfield is known for his charity work in Windsor over many years. Most recently he is a proud member of the "Do Good Divas" which is a non-profit group co-founded by his wife Gale Simko-Hatfield, and two friends, Barbara Holland and Lucy Fanson. The Divas raise tens of thousands of dollars each year for health-related causes in the Windsor area. While working at the CBC, Councillor Hatfield was a Union Shop Steward and held several national and international positions with the Canadian Media Guild (CMG), a Local within the Washington-based Newspaper Guild (TNG), and a sector of the Communications Workers of America (CWA). Councillor Hatfield served ten years as CMG Vice-President for Central Canada; three terms as an At-Large VP with TNG/CWA and two terms as TNG/CWA's Vice-President for Eastern Canada. Mr. Hatfield is an "army brat" who grew up on military bases across Canada, and he is a proud and active member of Riverside's Branch 255 of the Royal Canadian Legion where he has served several years on the Branch Executive. Councillor Hatfield has a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science from the University of Windsor. This year, he and wife Gale (who is a school board trustee and long-time Chair of the Greater Essex County District School Board) will celebrate 35 years of marriage. They have two children, Andrew and Lacey.                 |
