Alan Halberstadt, a Kitchener native, has worked as a journalist in Woodstock, Cambridge and at the Toronto Globe and Mail. He spent 16 years with the Windsor Star including seven as an editorial page columnist and sports columnist. Councillor Halberstadt was elected to the Windsor Public School Board in 1988. In 1997, he was elected to City Council and was re-elected in 2000, 2003 and 2006 in Ward 3. He has continued his journalistic pursuits with several publications in Windsor and Essex County, and he currently writes the feature column and freelances for Biz X Magazine. Alan Halberstadt has involved himself in the community for many years as a minor sports coach and organizer and taught courses on municipal politics at St. Clair College. He is co-founder of the Waterworld Springfest, the Clean City Committee and the Windsor Essex County Environment Committee, and was the driving force behind the transformation of a junk-laden vacant lot on Assumption Street into the Rivertown Gardens. Councillor Halberstadt is a prime mover in the Wipe Out Graffiti campaign, which is finally enjoying success with the consistent removal of graffiti by a private contractor and the Good Neighbour program operated by St. Leonard's House. He has a wife Susan and an adult son Andrew.                 |
