This area provides specialized services to seniors and special populations allowing them to access recreational and leisure services. Programs offered in community centers, pools and arenas are available to all people in the community, but in some cases accommodation may be required.

The Supervisor of Seniors and Special Populations will assist in coordinating information enabling people to obtain services in addition to providing information on specialized competitive events and equipment for athletes with disabilities.

Junior Inclusion Services
Recreation has a limited number of Special Needs Integrators who work directly with youth (children 13 and under) with special needs who are interested in attending one of our day camps. The Special Needs Integrators are located in a select number of community facilities. Families wishing to access services may have to travel to that location. Parents and caregivers who believe their child may need a Special Needs Integrator are requested to download and complete the Confidential Special Needs Registration Request Form (printed copies are also available at your local community centre). The Supervisor of Special Populations will then contact the applicant's parent/caregiver to review the request. This questionnaire must be completed annually.

One-on-One Volunteers
Parks and Recreation actively recruits youth and adult volunteers for many of our recreational programs and services. A training program is provided.

  • One-on-One Volunteers must be 14 years of age and may be working with children with special needs for the first time.
  • One-on-one support cannot be guaranteed as demand usually exceeds supply.
  • If a volunteer is unavailable, families may be requested to bring their own support worker.
  • Recreation may be able to secure a staff person as a support worker at an additional cost to the participant.

Senior Winter Games
The 55 plus generation enjoys 2010 Winter Games starting in November 2010. Everyone is welcome to cheer the athletes. Visit www.seniorgames-windsoressex.com for the complete line-up of competitive events. The 2010-2011 Winter schedule will be updated shortly.

Seniors Advisory Committee
A Committee of Council, the Seniors Advisory Committee identifies concerns and reports to the Mayor and City Council on issues that affect seniors in the City of Windsor. Currently there are three sub-committees: Advocacy, Community and Policy. For more details on the public forums recently organized by the Seniors Advisory Committee please visit the www.windsorseniors.com.

The Supervisor of Seniors and Special Populations acts as a resource to this committee and an advocate for senior programs in Windsor.
