Transit Windsor's Efforts

  • Hybrid buses unveiled on Monday, June 22, 2009.  Transit Windsor goes green.  Read news release and Backgrounder.  View hybrid bus.

  • In July 2008, City Council endorsed a plan to convert the already approved 2008 and 2009 bus orders from diesel to hybrid electric models. The 18 buses are slated for delivery in May 2009, and represent an immediate conversion of 18 percent of the fleet to hybrid technology.

  • A pilot project in 2003 for Free Transit on Smog Advisory Days resulted in ridership increases of up to 50 percent.

  • Transit Windsor used low sulphur diesel years prior to legislation.  This fuel has less smoke, 80 percent less sulphur and results in quicker starting engines.

  • A "Diesel Emission Protocol" was adopted by the Board of Directors that retrofits diesel buses with point one kits and catalytic converters based on more stringent U.S. EPA standards.

  • A pilot project was conducted with Sunoco to test PuriNOxTM fuel, which was composed of 20 percent water and expected to lower emissions by up to 50 percent.

  • Transit Windsor participates annually in Clean Air Day Canada including contests for elementary and secondary students.

  • Bike racks are in service from March 15 to December 15 on all fully accessible buses that combine two modes of environmentally friendly transportation.  The community has the best of both worlds with the flexibility of cycling with the speed and long-haul ability of transit.

  • Free shuttle service is provided to the annual fireworks display on the Detroit River.  Without this service, parking and crowd control in the downtown area would be unmanageable.
