Regular Transit Windsor fares apply to wheelchair passengers.  Companions or assistants are also obliged to pay the regular applicable fare.

Fully accessible buses are not intended to replace Handi-Transit service.

Customer Responsibilities:

  • Those travelling in wheelchairs must have the ability to board, manoeuvre and alight independently, safely and quickly.

  • If assistance is required, the wheelchair passenger must be accompanied by a companion to assume these responsibilities.

  • Please be patient as it may take a few extra moments for some customers to enter and exit the bus.

Getting On and Off the Bus:

  • The ramp is not automatically lowered on fully accessible buses.  Driver will lower ramp upon request and extend the front door ramp so as to create a minimum incline between the bus and the curb.

  • All wheelchair access must take place at the front door.

  • Customers in chairs or scooters, will be picked up and dropped off at regular bus stops.  Special request stops will be accommodated at the discretion of the driver, using the same criteria that applies to all other passengers, and provided the ramp can be deployed to a suitable on-street surface.
  • Find out about courtesy stops (at bottom of page).

Restraints:

  • The driver will assist the passenger in securing the chair in the floor brackets, to the fullest extent possible.  Passengers are strongly advised to apply brakes, and use any restraints (belts, etc.) equipped on their mobility device.

Bus with ramp down

The Transit Windsor Board of Directors adopted a "Full Accessibility Implementation Plan" in 1994 that mandated any new transit buses be fully accessible.

Calling of Stops

  • Our drivers will call a stop that has been requested by a passenger.  It is recommended that passengers requiring a stop to be called, to sit as close to the front as possible.

  • Find out about General Rider Guidelines.

General Guidelines:

  • No-step entrance and a deployable ramp on these buses provide access to public transportation for persons in wheelchairs (manual and electric), wheeled walkers, powered scooters, walkers and canes, or customers who are able to walk unassisted but have difficulty using stairs.

  • Fully accessible buses are indicated on published schedules when in service.

  • This equipment gives citizens with mobility challenges the freedom to enjoy regularly scheduled public transportation services.

  • Buses can accommodate two (2) wheelchairs.  One space is available immediately behind the driver, and the other is on the curb side directly across the aisle.

  • Seats must be raised to accommodate the wheelchair.  If customers are sitting in these seats, the driver will politely ask them to move to accommodate the wheelchair passenger.

  • When both wheelchair spaces are occupied with customers in wheelchairs, or if the bus is full to standing, the driver cannot board another wheelchair and on-coming passengers will have to wait for the next fully accessible bus.
