Currently Essex County has less than eight percent forest coverage, the lowest in all of Ontario. It is estimated that within 10 years, the region will lose up to 20 percent of its tree coverage or approximately one million trees to the emerald ash borer. The City of Windsor Parks and Recreation is commited to protecting and expanding the urban forest. One of its outreach programs, One Million Trees, has a two-pronged approach to reach its goals: environmental and educational. The environmental goals will build two Windsor nurseries to diversify Essex County’s Carolinian tree species as well as encourage the volunteer planting of 100,000 trees each year. The educational goals will raise public awareness about the One Million Trees project and the importance of trees in our community. The launch of a user-friendly resource website for public use is another major component in this project. Parks and Recreation 2450 McDougall Street
